Hi, I’m Shannon Firkins
I live in Rochester's South Wedge with my dog, Stevie, and my cat, Moon. Outside of work, you'll usually find me wandering thrift stores, cooking for friends, discovering new music, tending to my ever-growing collection of houseplants, or finding any excuse to support local artists and small businesses.
I believe communities become stronger when we take care of one another. I've always been drawn to work that leaves people and places better than I found them.
Good Work Dept. grew out of that belief.
For more than a decade, I've worked at the intersection of operations, finance, customer success, technology, and community-building. I've helped organizations untangle complex processes, implement new software, improve financial reporting, support leadership teams, and build systems that actually work for the people using them.
Why I started Good Work Dept.
Throughout my career, I've worked with organizations navigating growth, change, and limited resources. Again and again, I saw the same pattern: talented people spending too much time keeping the lights on and not enough time advancing their mission.
Outside of my professional work, I've found that same purpose in my community.
I'm a board member and Treasurer of Local Sound Collaborative, a Rochester nonprofit that invests in local musicians through artist grants, music education, and community programming. Working alongside our team has shown me firsthand what it takes to sustain a mission-driven organization, and how transformative thoughtful operations can be when every dollar and every hour matters.
Good Work Dept. grew from that experience.
It's a place where finance, operations, and technology become tools for community impact rather than obstacles to it.
My philosophy
I believe...
Organization is an act of care.
Clear systems create more time for meaningful work.
Transparency builds trust.
Good operations should feel calm, not complicated.
Communities become stronger when the organizations serving them have the support they deserve.
